Stupid Things People Do For Sneakers: Teens Wanted in Violent Mall Attack

Apparently, you can’t even shop in peace anymore without worrying about getting jumped for your sneakers.

In Montgomery County, police are searching for multiple teens connected to a violent robbery at Westfield Wheaton Mall.

According to investigators, the attack took place around 11:30 a.m. on March 16. Surveillance footage shows a shopper being approached from behind by a group of youths. One suspect struck the victim in the head, while others joined in, assaulting him as he fell to the ground.

The group then stole the victim’s designer sneakers and fled the mall.

Authorities have released images of several suspects. So far, some of the teens have come forward, but detectives with the Montgomery County 4th District Investigative Section are still working to identify all nine individuals involved—reportedly six boys and three girls. The group was seen wearing dark long-sleeve shirts and tan pants.

Violence Sparked Outrage Among Merchants

This incident is part of a troubling rise in violence at the mall, leaving both shoppers and store owners concerned.

One merchant said this wasn’t an isolated situation. In February, a separate incident reportedly involved a victim being stabbed by a group of teens inside a mall restroom.

“It scares me to think about my little sister coming here,” the merchant said. “Walking through this mall has become dangerous.”

David Smith called the latest attack “unacceptable” and said there will be an increased police presence moving forward.

He also urged parents to stay aware of their children’s whereabouts and behavior.
